Big Bass Starting Up

The speckled trout and redfish are biting, some quail hunters are still out and some warmer and rainy days ahead should help spur the white bass run. Good luck out there.

FLY FISHING FESTIVAL COMING

Mark your calendars for March 10-11, the Texas Fly Fishing & Brew Festival is coming back to the Plano Event Center. The event will include plenty of teaching, fly-casting lessons (including walk-up fly-casting lessons from the instructors at Tailwaters Fly Fishing Co.), popular speakers, and even a kayak demo pond. And then there’s the beer, from top Texas breweries. What a great combination. Read more about the event here.

TURN IN THOSE QUAIL HEADS

Quail hunters are still having some success, and the season runs through Feb. 25. To help with their research, the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch is asking quail hunters to provide quail heads so they can screen them for eyeworms and cecal worms. Go here for more details, and here to read about a field research hunt at the ranch.

NICE TROUT ON THE PROWL

On a recent trip out of Port Mansfield with Capt. Nathan Beabout, two of his three clients landed personal-best speckled trout, and the group brought in trout measuring 28.5, 29.5 and 30.5 inches. It was cold and nasty, but the limited number of bites produced big fish.

HUNTERS AND FISHERMEN ARE BIG SPENDERS

Revenue from outdoor recreation is now considered by the federal government in analyzing its gross domestic product. And, like we already knew, hunters and fishermen top the spending list. While outdoor recreation accounts for 2 percent of GDP, the hunting/shooting/trapping segment spent $15.4 billion in 2016, with hunting accounting for more than 60 percent of that amount. Boating/fishing activities were a whopping $38.2 billion.

BIG BASS STARTING UP

Guide Steve Schiele has been catching a lot of white bass on Lake Lewisville, and some big largemouths, too. In the last two weeks, two customers have caught 10 pounders, but they can expect just five to seven bites in a half-day. When they bite, there’s a great chance to catch a monster.
