Chuck Scates, famous fly guide, dies

by Lili Keys

Coastal fly fishermen and fly-fishing guides lost a friend and mentor on Monday, as well-known guide Chuck Scates lost his battle with cancer.

After all of the necessary calls were made, his friends and former co-workers at Redfish Lodge on Copano Bay told the rest of the fishing community of the loss of the lodge’s former general manager on their Facebook post.

“It is with heavy hearts that we say rest in peace. Chuck Scates passed away this morning. Our thoughts, prayers and memories are with his wife Lynn and his family.”

A memorial service is planned and will be announced within the next few days.

Scates started guiding fly fishermen in the early 1980s, and was known as one of, if not the top, fly-fishing flats guides in Texas, and was a mentor to several other flats guides. He guided on the Laguna Madre and out of Rockport.

I’m very sad to hear this. Not only was he an excellent guide, he was a class act and a man of great character. A nice guy, who helped me re-discover my love for coastal fishing. My heart goes out to his family. He will surely be missed.
