Volunteers are still walking beaches along the Texas coast looking for oil
According to reports, approximately 168,000 gallons of oil was spilled, which sounds like an awfully high number until you realize that the average backyard pool holds about 25,000 gallons.
Yesterday, response crews removed approximately 32,900 pounds of oiled sand and debris from shoreline on south Matagorda and Mustang islands and at the Padre Island National Seashore. Since shoreline recovery efforts began, approximately 71,350 pounds of oiled sand and debris has been removed. Oil on north Padre Island seems confined largely to tar balls in certain areas.
Fishing guides say the fishing is still good, although many are just avoiding areas that could be affected like parts of West Bay.
“There’s not much of anything (affected) in East Bay,” said guide Mark Talasek. “If we could get the wind to lay down, we’d be better off fishing wise. There aren’t a lot of people over in West Bay.”
Talasek said the trout bite for his wade-fishing clients has been very good when conditions are right for wading.
