It has been about a month since the creation of the Tailwaters Ladies Club, and they already have 60 members who are eager to get more into fly-fishing and be active in a group that shares a common interest.
Avid fishermen and LSON contributing writer, Madison Scarborough, wanted to make an impact in her community through her job at Tailwaters Fly Shop.
“On my first day working at Tailwaters, I told my manager, Neil Turner, that I wanted to create an environment in the shop and the sport as a whole that made women feel more comfortable. At the time, I wasn’t exactly sure how that idea would pan out, but I knew that either way there would be something great that came out of it,” Scarborough said.
After six months of working in the shop and meeting many women who showed interest in Scarborough’s plan to start fishing centered events for ladies, the club was brought to life with the suggestions and encouragement from her co-workers. Thus, the Tailwaters Ladies Club was born.
Its first event was held at Tailwaters shop on January 7th for a meet and greet, with an initial virtual meeting held the following week for members who live out of town or who could not make it into the shop in person.
The Club has some exciting events planned for the next few months.
In February, the club will have breakfast together before the Texas Fly Fishing and Brew fest and then caravan to the festival. We’ll also be starting up our virtual fly-fishing book club as well.
For March, the club has a casting lesson planned which will cover the basics of a fly-cast. The March virtual meeting is planned to revolve around a conversation highlighting nonprofits and fly-fishing.
The Spring 2021 events will conclude with a live Zoom class held by Lindsay Kocka who specializes in yoga and fly-fishing.
Membership dues are $50 to join which includes events, a customized Tailwatwaters Ladies Club hat, stickers, 10% off any one item in the shop or online.
This club is full of amazing women who share a similar passion and see the importance of connecting with other like-minded women. There are already so many wonderful female fly-fishing groups in the United States, and we hope that more continue to pop up.
