Fishing is getting the full attention of many Texans, as hunting gets a break until turkey season opens later this month. Big rains flooded some rivers and filled reservoirs, setting the stage for some great fishing once the water settles down.

SEND IN THOSE PUBLIC COMMENTS
A number of hunting regulation changes are proposed, and the comment period is open. Included this year are antler restrictions for mule deer in some Panhandle counties and adding three weeks to the general deer season in Texas’ North Zone. The use of airguns and air bows for hunting big game also is on the list of proposals. Make your voice heard here.
FLYFISH TEXAS HITS FORT WORTH
Would you like to fly-fish for stocked rainbows in the shadow of downtown Fort Worth? Flyfish Texas, put on by the Tarrant Regional Water District, takes place next Saturday. More than 1,200 pounds of trout and 3,000 pounds of native fish will be released, and there is food, wine, beer and live music. Read more about Flyfest here.
NICE TROUT ON THE PROWL
On a recent trip out of Port Mansfield with Capt. Nathan Beabout, two of his three clients landed personal-best speckled trout, and the group brought in trout measuring 28.5, 29.5 and 30.5 inches. It was cold and nasty, but the limited number of bites produced big fish.
QUAIL EVENTS
Quail season may be over, but there are still quail-related functions to keep your mind on the birds. The Park Cities Quaildinner and auction, that raises nearly $1 million each year, takes place on March 8. And, for those looking to manage their land for quail, or just learn more about the bird, Quail Appreciation Day is on March 29 at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas in Fort Worth.
TOP-WATER SPECKLED TROUT, REDS
Waders are reporting trout and redfish hitting top-water lures as the water warms along the Texas coast, so grab your Skitter Walks or other favorites and have some fun. Trout along with redfish are being found in back lagoons, and the sheepshead should be moving in very soon.
