Huge taxidermy auction comes to Fort Worth

by Lili Keys

On Oct. 23 and 24, Taxidermy King will hold a taxidermy and Western auction, liquidating 10 estates.

Owner John Brommel said the auctions at John Brommel’s Taxidermy & Western & Antique Auction will begin at 9 a.m. each day due to so many lots. The auctions will take place at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in the Poultry Barn/Exhibits Building 1.

The collections, consisting of 1,400 lots, come from nine legendary hunters with magnificent collections, including exotic trophy mounts, ivory tusks, bronzes, art, antiques, skulls, horns and Indian and Cowboy items.

“There are the best quality mounts we’ve had in our 30 years,” Brommel said. “There are several legendary hunters’ private collections, lots of artwork and paintings — five of the best collections ever sold.”

The estates include Kirby Eden, Gary Leanardo, Charles Eddy and the world-famous Harvey Payne.

“And many of the world’s top taxidermists have consigned to this sale, including Heads Above the Rest and Conroe Taxidermy,” Brommel said.

Highlights include 40 Rocky Mountain bighorns, seven African lions, 400 Boone & Crockett-class deer, life-sized walrus, giraffe, leopard, crocodile and sheep, not to mention ivory tusk sets, Indian-style blanket, knives, and moose, elk, bongo and cougar mounts.

A live preview will take place Oct. 22 beginning at 10 a.m. and Oct. 23 until the auction starts.

These are liquidations, so bring a U-Haul and save big,” Brommel said.

Live and online bidding is available, with four ways to bid: Live at the auction; online with Proxybid; by phone; and leaving absentee bids. For online bidding, go to proxybid.com/taxidermyking.
