aasteveAnglers started the third leg of the 2013 Kayak Angler Tournament Series on Fayette Lake with cold winds and thunderstorm warnings, but it didn’t stop the fishing.

Despite the weather conditions, some anglers found the winds and cloud cover a challenge. The winds caused large waves that affected anglers who fished near the dam.

Kristian Kolflat, tournament director, has seen a surge of new anglers entering and placing in tournaments this year.

The pro division winner was Matt Moccia, with a 5-fish stringer measuring 99.5 inches. That was nearly a 20-inch average. Moccia fished a crankbait near the bottom in 8 to 14 feet of water to catch all of his bass.

“I used my anchor to slow me down from the wind,” Moccia said. “ Then I just fan casted to cover as much area as I could.”

Moccia has high hopes in the next tournaments to hopefully finish high enough to compete in the KATS Classic.

The big bass of the day ended with a three-way tie, with each angler catching a 22-inch bass.

The next tournament in the Kayak Angler Tournament Series will be held April 27 on Lake Travis.
