This wasn’t the first time the team of Charles Whited, of San Marcos, and Bill Polkinghorn, of Hockley, have had to mount a comeback in the Bass Champs Central Division.
The winners of this year’s Bass Champs Central Championship on Lake LBJ came from behind on the final day to claim the win and retain their title for a second straight year.
“Last year we won the Belton championship, and we were in seventh place and came back,” Whited said. “This time we were in twelfth place and came back.”
Whited said the team had lost a couple of fish that hurt their standings on the first day, and knew they had to pull out all the stops to keep their title.
“We went on the river channel edge and cranked big crankbaits, and swung for the fence,” he said. “We had done the same thing in the morning, just in a different area.”
Having knowledge of the lake made a difference for the pair, according to Whited.
“We did our homework,” he said. “I practiced about seven or eight days, when usually I practice one or two days for tournaments. We covered a lot of water and fished a lot of log jams.”
So did the team think they had overcome their deficit?
“We figured what we had in our boat was bigger than any sack the first day, so we knew we had a good chance,” he said. “We knew we were in the hunt. Don’t ever count anybody out fishing; one bite goes a long way.”
