Best fishing is shallow on Matagorda Bay

lsonwebIt’s that time of year for the fishing to keep getting better and better, according to Matagorda Bay guide Capt. Michael Rolf.

“It’s that time of the year to be good, and the fishing has been really good here lately,” he said. “Some days we’re catching reds, some days trout and sometimes it’s both. We’re catching big flounder, too.”

The redfish have been holding shallow, while the trout are in water from 3 to 5 feet deep, he said. Rolf has mostly been using artificials, but live bait under a popping cork has also been effective.

“Last week I had a trip where we caught four oversized (redfish) and one 41-incher,” he said.

Water conditions delegate the areas of the bay that will provide the best fishing, Rolf said.

“Usually we’re targeting shell for the trout and we’re fishing mud for the redfish,” he said.
