The crew from Lone Star Outdoor News is saddened to learn about the passing of our friend and colleague Bob Hood, who died this morning.
Bob was a longtime friend of the paper, wrote many stories for us and was one of the best outdoor writers that ever lived.
He began his career at the Fort Worth Star Telegram when he was a teenager and never looked back.
We will miss his outstanding writer, good humor and friendship.

Robert Louis “Bob” Hood, 69, of Possum Kingdom Lake, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at the First Baptist Church, Graham. Burial followed at McAdams Cemetery at Possum Kingdom Lake under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Bob was born June 28, 1944, in Fort Worth, to the late James Oscar and Ina Louise (Pipes) Hood. He and LaDee Kimberley Dobbs were soulmates for 16 years and were married Aug. 24, 2013, in Graford. He worked for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for 53 years.
Starting at age 11, he was a paper boy, followed by many years in the sports department where he covered high school sports, rodeos, track and field, professional tennis and golf, Golden Gloves and all other sports before getting the outdoors beat in 1968.
Bob was the Star-Telegram’s outdoor writer for 40 years before retiring in 2008. He was contracted by the Star-Telegram to continue writing outdoors articles. He was also the hunting editor for the Texas Fish and Game Magazine and was a contributing writer for Texas Sportsman magazine, Texas Sporting Journal magazine, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoors Journal, Lone Star Outdoor News and other outdoor publications.
He won the Texas State Bass Fishing Tournament three times, received the Texas State Bass Tournament’s Mac Payne Award for sportsmanship and was inducted into the Texas State Bass Tournament Hall of Fame and Falcon Lake Hall of Fame. Last spring, he was inducted into the Muy Grande Hall of Fame at Freer.
He was named the Fort Worth Ducks Unlimited Sportsman of the Year in 2000 and was named the Fort Worth Ducks Unlimited Sportsman of the Decade for the 1990s. Bob was past president of Texas Outdoor Writers Association, where he was a lifetime member and was on the TOWA board of directors. Also, he was awarded the Texas Outdoor Writers Association’s Daiwa Award for “lifetime achievements” in 1983 and again was awarded the TOWA’s L.A. Wilke Award for “lifetime achievements” in 2010. He was also an honorary member of the Dallas Safari Club.
Survivors include his wife, Kim Dobbs, of Possum Kingdom Lake; daughters Shelly Archer and husband Tommy, of College Station, and Heather Dobbs, of Possum Kingdom Lake; son Jimmy Hood of Euless; brothers Bill Hood, of Aledo, and Paul Hood and wife Marian of Oklahoma; grandchildren Matthew, Bobby, Melinda, Jessica, Thomas Archer and Jennifer Williams; and great grandchild Skyler Williams.
