Outdoor writer, Ray Sasser, died late last night after a long illness.

Sasser was the outdoor editor for The Dallas Morning News and the voice of sportsmen and conservationists for 34 years. Sasser also contributed stories to Lone Star Outdoor News.

“I could always count on Ray to have good insight on a controversial story and would call him to get his opinion frequently,” said David J. Sams, founder of Lone Star Outdoor News.

Park Cities Quail sent out these quotes today.

Ray Sasser

He was a total sportsman, tremendously gifted writer and, an even better human being. Ray had the special ability to inspire hunters and non-hunters on the finer and more gentile aspects of this great American pastime.”

In recognition of his accomplishments, Park Cities Quail presented Ray with the T. Boone Pickens Lifetime Sportsman Award in 2009.

Ray represented the best qualities to which we all aspire. He was an expert hunter and fisherman, and a great family man who shared many adventures with his constant companion and wife Emilie. He was a friend that was free with advice on where and how to have the best experience. He could articulate the grandeur in the habitat, game, dogs and the gentlemen and women who pursue this noble pastime. He was concerned about the future and encouraged conservation and youth participation. He was also not afraid to voice an opinion on policies and practices that he believed were detrimental to every sportsman having access to the vast resources of Texas. Ray promoted Park Cities Quail’s very first dinner in 2007 and was critical to our success.”

Sasser is survived by his wife, Emilie, daughter Jenny, and son Zach.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR RAY SASSER HAVE BEEN SET FOR 3:00 MONDAY, MARCH 5, AT THE HIGHLAND PARK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.
