Turkey hunters don’t like to miss an opening day, and they couldn’t wait to head out March 31 in Texas’ North Zone. Some found cooperative birds, but many others battled high winds and quiet (or at least they couldn’t hear them) toms. The birds were making more noise down south, though. Bass anglers are seeing water temperatures reach the magic number in many reservoirs, bringing the spawning fish in.

IS THE SOCIAL MEDIA BUBBLE BURSTING?

Those in the hunting or firearms industries who rely solely or partially on third-party internet platforms to communicate with others are in a time of concerning instability. YouTube recently announced it will ban videos that promote or link to websites selling firearms. Most all web platforms are banning content to some degree, whether Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or Twitter, either after a complaint or on their own, citing “Sensitive Content.” And some public figures in our industry have seen their entire pages hacked, leaving them with nothing to share.

HEAD TO LAMPASAS FOR THE HOFFPAUIR EXPO

If you have spring fever and can’t wait to get your hands on the latest outdoor gear, head to the second annual Hoffpauir Expo on April 14. At the 100-plus acre Hoffpauir Ranch, the expo will be double the size of last year’s event that drew more than 5,000 attendees, with many coming to see if they can win some of the incredible prizes, including a Polaris Ranger. If there is an outdoor product you’re interested in, it will be there. Lone Star Outdoor News will be there, so come by and see us and meet Dakota, the Lone Star Outdoor News newsroom dog. It’s all free.

BIG BASS WELCOME SPRING

Stacy Spriggs of Huntsville caught a 13.06 pound, 27 inch largemouth bass during the Second Annual Stanley Burgay Memorial Bass Tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. She was fishing a Carolina rig in 8 feet of water. Her fish was one of several giants coming in, with other 13-plus pound fish landed from Kurth Reservoir, Twin Buttes Reservoir, and three big bass from Lake Fork.

HUGE TAXIDERMY AUCTION

For anyone looking for taxidermy for an office, restaurant or home, Taxidermy King’s April 20-21 auction at Fort Worth’s Will Rogers Center will feature the most record book animals ever sold in one auction. The more than 700 mounts will include 100 whitetails measuring more than 200 inches, and up to 450 inches. Attend in person or bid online.

HELP YOUTH AND ENJOY WILD GAME AT THE SAME TIME

The Christian Outdoor Ministry will host a Wild Game Dinner, auction and raffle at the Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Dallas on April 26. The ministry, led by Dr. Danny Souder, provides youth and their families opportunities each month to experience God’s creation through hunting and fishing events, and the money raised goes to scholarships for youth to participate.
