Capt. Nathan Beabout of Seadrift gave the surf a try for speckled trout, and he’s happy he did.

“All parts of the bay have been producing fish, from the shell to the shorelines,” he said. “A buddy and I wanted to check out some other territory for a string of upcoming trips. There was an ENE wind so decided to try our luck in the surf.”

The trout bite was great.

“I haven’t seen a bite like that in awhile,” Beabout said. “We caught and released some 50 trout between 19 and 22 inches, all caught on a 1/4-ounce jighead with a dark-colored plastic.”

The color of the plastic made no difference, as long as it was dark.

“I changed colors six or seven times and it didn’t matter, they bit them all,’ Beabout said.
