Last season, game warden James Cummings was routinely checking hunters in Merkle County when he met Billy Joe Orms. Orms was 89 at the time.
“He doesn’t look his age,” Cummings said. “I gave him my card and told him when he came back this year (at 90), I would buy him lunch.”
Orms thought about his lunch date all year.
Two weeks before the season, Orms’ son called Cummings to make sure that the lunch was still on. Orms hunted that morning and then the pair met for lunch in Sweetwater and swapped stories.
“After 17 opening days, I needed that refresh to my soul,” Cummings said.
Cummings said he was looking forward to their lunch date again next year.
