Weekend update

by Lili Keys

Taylor Hughs, 11, got an early birthday present this weekend at a Kendall County ranch. A father-son weekend of hunting resulted in an 8-point buck for Taylor. His dad told him to wait on a good one. Sure enough, a buck came out of the brush and Taylor made a great shot. It was his first nice buck – thanks to a lesson learned about patience. Meanwhile in Atascosa County, Craig Nyhus took four students hunting for the first time on a Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation hunt. All successfully harvested a buck at the Williams Ranch, while some also took hogs and does. Nyhus managed to squeeze in a dove hunt in the South Zone, netting 17 birds between three people. David Sams was also in Atascosa County doing maintenance on a ranch, watching deer, hunting hogs — and dove, which he reported was on the slow side.

In fishing news this weekend, Capt. Nathan Beabout reported catching many trout in the 18-20 inch range and several mid-slot redfish at San Antonio Bay.
